In this work, conventional (non-coherent), coherent-jet, and high pressure coolant delivery systems are compared for profile creep-feed grinding, under non-continuous dressing conditions. To facilitate this comparison, an analytical method of determining the available flow (coolant that hits the wheel or workpiece) was presented. The coolant delivery systems were compared for five different feed rates. At each feed rate the form error was measured using a coordinate measuring machine at five cross sections along the workpiece. The high-pressure coolant delivery system had the lowest form error and had an available flow of only 1.7 Llmin. The non-coherent jet had the second best form error and had an available flow of 17 Llmin. The coherent jet had the highest form error with an available flow of 39 Llmin. The coolant penetration in grinding with segmented wheels—part 1: mechanism and comparison with conventional wheels

This paper aims to study the mechanism of coolant penetration into a wheel-work contact zone when a segmented or conventional wheel is used in surface grinding. Based on the principles of fluid motion and considerations of spin-off and splash, analytical models for both conventional and segmented wheels were developed for predicting the power of pumping coolant into the contact zone. It was rev...

Comparison of different turbulence models in a high pressure fuel jet

In this study, modeling of a fuel jet which has been injected by high pressure into a low-pressure tank are investigated. Due to the initial conditions and the geometry of this case and similar cases (like CNG injectors in internal combustion engines (ICE)), the barrel shocks and Mach disk are observed. Hence a turbulence and transient flow will be expected with lots of shocks and waves. Accord...

Background and aims: Discharging compressed air through conventional single jet nozzles or open pipes is a common jet noise in industry. This study is aimed to reduce air blow gun jet noise by designing and fabrication of multiple jet nozzle as a substitute for conventional single jet nozzles.  Methods: One of the most common commercial air blow gun equipped with a conventional single j...

Jet heat transfer in the vicinity of a rotating grinding wheel

Impinging jets are known as a method of achieving high convective heat transfer coefficients. One potential application of impinging jet heat transfer is the air jet cooling of a grinding process. A grinding process generates heat that must be dissipated to avoid thermal damage. To date, this has been achieved using flood cooling with a traditional coolant such as an oil and water mixture; howe...

An Innovation in Film Cooling of the Gas Turbine Blades Applying an Upstream Jet

A new design concept is introduced to control the near-wall integration between the hot-gas boundary layer and the cooling jets in order to enhance the adiabatic film cooling effectiveness of the gas turbine blades. In this new approach, another film cooling port, having a very low blowing ratio, which prevents formation of the counter-rotating vortex pare, is applied just upstream of the main ...
